@secu_foundation's Board of Directors welcomed our CEO, Tchernavia Montgomery, MSW,LCSW, to participate on a panel of grantees representing 20 years of Foundation funding across the state. The panel spoke at the Board’s recent Spring Planning Session in Wilmington and covered all four ...Foundation focus areas - healthcare, housing, human services and education. Ms. Montgomery fielded questions on Care Ring’s role as a healthcare provider for underserved and uninsured populations of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, and reflected on the transformational impact of the recent SECU Foundation grant in the amount of $350,000 to support Care Ring’s renovation of a new facility in Charlotte’s First Ward.

At our recent inaugural Black Maternal Health Conference, we presented our first-ever maternal health IMPACT Awards (Innovating Maternal Programming and Advancing Communities Together). One of our winners was Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, PhD, who represents District 12 in the House of ...Representatives. Congresswoman Adams was instrumental in the creation of the proposed MOMNIBUS Act, which includes 13 individual federal bills that seek to address the maternal mortality rate and worsening crisis through historic investments that comprehensively address every driver of mortality, morbidity and disparities in the United States, such as: housing, transportation and nutrition; extending WIC and postpartum service eligibility; growing and diversifying the perinatal workforce; and improving maternal care for incarcerated moms just to name a few.

Accepting the award on the Congresswoman's behalf was her Communications Director, Lo'an Lake, as she was unable to attend due to other duties. Presenting the award was Felicia Barnes, Care Ring Board member and NFP program graduate and ambassador.

At our recent inaugural Black Maternal Health Conference, we presented our first-ever maternal health IMPACT Awards (Innovating Maternal Programming and Advancing Communities Together). One of the honorees was @mecklenburgcounty, who has robustly supported our growth of vital maternal and infant ...home visitation and community outreach services. In addition to spearheading our county’s Prenatal to Three Strategic Plan, in 2022, Care Ring received a sizeable ARPA award to expand our Nurse-Family Partnership - or “NFP” program. Now the largest program in the southeastern United States, its capacity to serve has helped address a need with those families with complex needs. To further enhance their ability to serve, Care Ring welcomed into its programming in 2021, A Guided Journey, which is a community-health worker driven maternal child health program. Collectively, these 2 programs are scheduled to serve nearly 1,300 families annually. We are elated to share that these investments are already making an impact in our community, as we’ve seen slight improvements in infant mortality rates in our county year over year.

Accepting the award on behalf of Mecklenburg County was Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County Public Health Director, who also asked that anyone who worked for the county in attendance at the event please stand and be acknowledged, as well as thanking County Manger Dena Diorio, Deputy County Manager Anthony Trotman, and the Board of County Commissioners. Presenting the award was Felicia Barnes, Care Ring Board member and NFP program graduate and ambassador.

April is Alcohol Abuse Awareness Month, and we'd like to express our appreciation to the Mecklenburg County ABC Board for its investment in our Access to Care programs over the past few years, which allow us to screen patients for substance abuse disorders and create a pathway to treatment ...options.

Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17) was extended as yesterday we co-hosted a Respectful Maternity Care Simulation with and at @unccharlotte and their Dept of Public Health Sciences (Lorenzo Hopper and Alicia Dahl, Ph.D., M.S., Shanika Jerger Butts, MPH, MBA) along with First TEAM America and ...Danette McLaurin Glass.

This simulation gives providers, students, and community members a first person POV into real-life negative care interactions Black birthing people have experienced. After the simulation, participants are debriefed and discuss their experiences. We were also pleased to learn that the daughter of Charlotte’s first Black ob/gyn, Dr. Kenneth Chambers, was present for the simulation (first photo, in animal print top).
