Heart Healthy

For women in America, heart disease is the #1 cause of death. This coming Friday, February 3 is National Wear Red Day, an opportunity to raise awareness of heart disease and show support for those battling this disease.

At Care Ring we’ve been on the front lines of battling heart disease and promoting healthy living since our founding in the 1950s. We were originally known as Heart Services of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, signifying our primary focus in our early years on providing health services for individuals with heart disease and providing education in the community on healthy living.

Going back through our archives recently it was fun to see the variety of ways our founders took our mission to serve others out to Charlotte.

We held a variety of symposia and special programming on the importance of healthy living for local nursing, dental and medical societies. In cooperation with the local WSOC radio station we hosted a series of radio programs entitled “Heart-to Heart Talks.”

We brought educational materials and health promotion advocacy to local PTA meetings, held seminars at then Queens Evening College (today’s Queens University of Charlotte), delivered “Heart and Home” demonstrations at Piedmont Natural Gas and the local Sears and Roebuck store to teach employees ways to incorporate healthy lifestyles and healthy behaviors into their everyday lives.

Today Charlotte is blessed to have a powerful voice and advocate for heart healthy living through our local chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA).

From inspirational videos to teach people how to reduce their chances of developing heart disease, to online references to the latest research on the best nutrition and exercise options to stay healthy, the AHA is a vital resource and is leading the charge to reduce heart disease across the country and in our city.

We strongly support the AHA and encourage others to partner with them to address this critical public health issue.

So this Friday Care Ring will be wearing red for sure – in many ways it was our original color!
