Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17) was extended as yesterday we co-hosted a Respectful Maternity Care Simulation with and at @unccharlotte and their Dept of Public Health Sciences (Lorenzo Hopper and Alicia Dahl, Ph.D., M.S., Shanika Jerger Butts, MPH, MBA) along with First TEAM America and Danette McLaurin Glass.

This simulation gives providers, students, and community members a first person POV into real-life negative care interactions Black birthing people have experienced. After the simulation, participants are debriefed and discuss their experiences. We were also pleased to learn that the daughter of Charlotte’s first Black ob/gyn, Dr. Kenneth Chambers, was present for the simulation (first photo, in animal print top).

WE'VE BEEN KEEPING A HUGE SECRET, NOW WE CAN FINALLY LET IT OUT! On Wednesday, March 20th, Care Ring made an historic announcement: that after 20 years of amazing growth and service to the community at our current home in the @ascendnps building, we will be moving to a new home this Fall at 1514 N Graham Street (near @campnorthend) into a larger and renovated space! Thanks to some extremely generous donors such as The Leon Levine Foundation, CD Spangler Foundation, Bissell Ballantyne Legacy Foundation, The @merancas Foundation, @secu_foundation, The Cannon Foundation Inc., @hornetsgive Foundation, and The Springsteen Foundation, we've raised $2.2M of our $2.56M goal to help us turn the page on a new chapter in our nearly 70-year history.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. We appreciate the support of the @coloncancercoalition whose annual Get Your Rear In Gear - Charlotte, NC @gyrig_charlotte 5K Walk/Run raises funds to provide colon cancer screenings to the uninsured. February is National Heart Health Month, and today is Go Red for Women Day! Thank you to the @americanheartnc and Shannon Emmanuel, CHWC for providing our agency with decorations and informative handouts on heart health for our patients. Our Low-Cost Clinic (some staff pictured) is proud to have heart health outcomes similar to those of for-profit medical practices, despite the many challenges our patients face like food insecurity and living in food deserts, difficulty affording medications, living in high-crime areas where it is unsafe to walk or jog, and do much more. Thanks to our caring staff and our wonderful partner orgs, we are able to educate, support and connect our patients to the resources they need to take care of their health in the way that they would like to.
