We conclude our celebration of Black Philanthropy Month with a highlight of Care Ring Board member Jewel Greywoode, MD. Dr. Greywoode is an otolaryngologist who specializes in cosmetic and functional facial plastic surgery. He practices with Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates, P.A. (@ceenta1923) and is part of Care Ring's Physicians Reach Out network of volunteer providers who donate free care to our patients. Dr. Greywoode also volunteers internationally with Samaritan's Purse, and shared this with us:

"Since 2018, I have been a part of a medical mission trip with Samaritan's Purse to Liberia to repair cleft lip and cleft palates. The patients are so grateful and the work is very rewarding. One of the highlights of this past year has been the opportunity for me to work alongside Liberian doctors improving the lives of their fellow countrymen. Building capacity and training the surgeons there to do the work has been so rewarding. This group of surgeons have dedicated their lives to work in the ELWA mission hospital providing care for those who need it. It has been an honor to be a part of of the story of those providing healing and hope."

We continue our celebration of #BlackPhilanthropyMonth with Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority's Chief Financial Officer Anthony Shelborne, a new supporter to Care Ring, but a long-time advocate for the underserved. He says: "I met {Care Ring CEO} Tchernavia Montgomery and learned about her journey; her story resonated with me. I am the product of a young, single, underinsured mother who worked hard to ensure I had opportunities. I like Care Ring's mission, and I wanted to support an organization that gives women healthcare access and helps their lives so they can concentrate on other things. Impactful training this week with the @americanheartnc Aleah Johnson (in red), their Community Health Equity Program Director & visit from Shannon Emmanuel, VP of Community Impact. Our Nurse-Family Partnership team received “Measuring Accurately" training. AHA is providing 100 automatic blood pressure cuffs for our expectant & new mothers experiencing hypertension, which will be loaned out to moms. NFP staff will train clients in accurately taking their blood pressures in the home, educating clients on what the numbers really mean & how to report their blood pressure readings to their OB provider.

🙏🏼 to have this tool to support our mothers to have healthy & SAFE pregnancies and deliveries & to help us address disparities in outcomes for women of color.

Undetected & uncontrolled high blood pressure may lead to stroke or heart attack, as well as preeclampsia & eclampsia — potentially fatal conditions in which blood pressure spikes during pregnancy.

High blood pressure is common, affecting 17.6% of women of childbearing age in the US and has increased in the past decade, according to the 2019 National Center for Health Statistics

Black women of childbearing age with high blood pressure were more than 2x likely to have uncontrolled high blood pressure than white women, and among those who were aware of their diagnosis, Black women were 3x more likely to have uncontrolled blood pressure.

The risk factors for high blood pressure persisted among Black women after considering social determinants of health.

Black & Asian women had a higher average blood pressure and were more likely to have uncontrolled high blood pressure than white women; 38% and 36%, respectively, versus 25%.

Food insecurity was higher among Hispanic and Black women compared with white women, 32% and 25%, respectively, versus 13% among white women.

Asian women were more often unaware of their high blood pressure and were more likely to have uncontrolled blood pressure compared with white women.

1 in 4 Black women and 1 in 3 Hispanic women reported food insecurity.

August is Black Philanthropy Month, celebrated globally to commemorate and advance Black giving and funding equity. We are highlighting Care Ring Board member and Finance Committee Chair Samuel Long, PhD who is a Finance Lead Consultant with @wellsfargo. He says of his involvement with Care Ring, "When I think back to the environment in which I grew up, and even today, there was and still is a lack of access to proper medical care across the minority and/or lower income communities. There is also a lack of knowledge that exists in those communities, which often results in people not seeking proper medical care, even when it is accessible. Not only does Care Ring provide affordable care to the underprivileged, they also educate where possible to help close that gap of knowledge and put more people from those communities in a position to better care for themselves and families. I have been blessed and fortunate enough to reach a point in my life and career to where I can give back. I have chosen to do so by supporting Care Ring because of the positive contribution they make in the communities that lack the knowledge and accessibility to proper medical care." Thank you to @rvohealth whose interns gathered and donated 25 gift bags with diapers, wipes, baby care basics kits and water bottles, along with a little over 100 individual packs of baby wipes to our maternal child health program for us to gift to the mothers in our Nurse-Family Partnership and A Guided Journey services. Thank you also to Rose Aka-James with RVO Health who helped to coordinate the project.
